EFFECT OF X-IRRADIATION ON THE DEGENERATION AND REGENERATION OF PERIPHERAL NERVES
The effect of x irradiation on the degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves was studied. 61 adult rabbits were used, 36 of which were irradiated for 4 days with a daily dose of 300 r applied to the middle part of the left thigh. Seven days later about 0.5 cm of the left sciatic nerve was resected. The animals were watched constantly for 6 months and several were killed after various periods. The central and peripheral segments of the sciatic nerve and the tibial and peroneal nerves were examined histologically. 25 control unirradiated rabbits were otherwise treated in an identical manner. The results showed that regenerative processes commenced in the nerve of the irradiated animal relatively late, lasting longer than in the control. Irradiation also considerably inhibited the process of degeneration of the axons and resorption of the decomposition products in the injured nerve. (P.C.H.)
