In the concentration range 10-3 to 10-1 M, KI decreased yields of glycol and of H2 and increased formaldehyde yield in Co60- gamma radiolysis of liquid methanol according to the stoichiometric relationship - Δ G(glycol) + Δ G(H2) approx equal Δ G(H2CO). CsCl has similar but less pronounced effects and KBr and KCl are without effect. The chlorides of La, Gd, Dy, Y, and Lu, at concentrations >0.05 M, have effects on G(glycol), and G(H2CO) that are qualitatively similar to that of KI (changes in G(H2) are attributable to an acid effect); effects within the group differ quantitatively in a manner independent of ntomic number or magnetic character (paramagnetic or diamagnetic). The effects of the salts other than KI are discussed in terms of the influence of degree of solvation. The effect of KI on G(glycol) and G(H2CO) is concluded to be attributable to the chemistry of the I- ion itseif and to be non-dependent on its mass or atomic number as such. The important mode of behavior that leads to H/sub 2/CO enhancement and equal glycol decrease is suggested to be CH3O + I- → CH3 O- + I.
