A METHOD FOR SUTDYING THE FISSION PROCESS AT A SPECIFIC EXCITATION ENERGY OF THE COMPONENT NUCLEIUS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · At. Energ. (USSR)
OSTI ID:4708069
An investigation of the fission due to charged particles and neutrons with energies in the range of several tens of Mev's may help to clarify the effect of the excitation energy of the nucleus on the fission process, but emission of one or several neutrons complicates the interpretation of the results. A subtractive'' method is proposed for the study of fission phenomena, such as the mass distribution of the fission fragments and the kinetic energy distribution at certain given excitation energies of the nucleus. As an example, the experimental data of the fission of U/sup 233/ and Th/sup 232/ by alpha particles, obtained by the time-of-flight method, are analyzed. It is shown that at an energy of about 25 Mev of the fissioning nucleus, the fission is asymmetrical and that the dip of the kinetic energy for symmetric fission is preserved. (TTT)
