More than 50 commercially available compounds thnt can be broadly classified as surface-active agents were experimentalIy screened. A set of four desirable characteristics thnt surfactants should have if they are to be useful in solvent extraction of inorganic ions was developed. Model compounds were chosen to demonstrate these principles. It was found that the most promising reagents flt the broad definition of ion-association type solvent extraction systems. A previously proposed sub-classification was accepted for extractions by ion-association. Studies designed to elucidate the stoichiometry of the extraction mechanisms were carried out. Data on the Pluroric L-60 extractions of zinc and cobalt from aqueous sodium thiocyannte solutions supported the broader definition of ionassociation solvent extractions. It also cast doubt on the proposition that hydrogens are a necessary integral part of the extracted species. The potential of the qunternary ammonium salts as general extraction reagents was already known. Aliquat 336 was found to have the best properties of this class of compounds. The extraction reagent potential of the polypropylene glycols was not previously studied. When their low volatility, chemical stability, and high solubility in many organic diluents were considered, it was concluded that they could replace many separation schemes presently based on low molecular weight ethers, tributyl phosphate, and methyl isobutyl ketone. The mechanism of extractions with aryl sulfonates was previously elucidated. Their potential is not very great because of the grent selfassociation of these molecules. No additional useful models for the weak liquid cation exchange classification were found by experiments with alkyl and aryl aminocarboxylic acids. (auth)
