THE RECIPROCAL EFFECT OF THORIUM AND CERIUM (IV) NITRATES ON CO-EXTRACTION WITH TRIBUTYLPHOSPHATE (TBP) (in Russian)

The extraction of thorium and cerium (IV) nitrates by Tl3P was investigated in the presence of 1.5N nliric acid in the equilibrium aqueous phase. The presence of a small amount of cerium in the aqueous phase resuited in a sharp drop in the distribution coefficient of thorium (K/sub T/). This effect was more pronounced at low concentrations of thorium. Cerium replaces thorium in the organic phase. At a concentration of about 18 g/l of cerium, thorium is a weak salting agent, but at a concentration of cerium greater than 40 g/l, thorium has hardly any effect on the extraction of cerium. These data are valid not only for 100% TBP, but also for 20 and 50 vol % TBP in CCl/sub 4/. The addition of hydrogen peroxide to reduce Ce (IV) to Ce (III) improved the extraction of thorium from monazite sands. (TTT)
