WAVEGUIDE TAPERS
A mathematical investigation of waveguide tapered sections is undertaken. The nonlinear differential equation describing propagation through a taper is derived so that particular solutions of the differential equation may be applied to E-plane, H-plane, and compound tapered sections in rectangular waveguides as well as flared sections in cylindrical waveguides. Reflectionless tapers are obtained by properly apportioring the waveguide wall shape together with the length of taper section. Such a procedure is generally necessary; however, a notable exception is the constant impedance compound taper that has no critical length and for which the shape of one of the walls may be chosen arbitrarily.
