URANIUM-THORIUM SEPARATION BY DI-SEC-BUTYLPHENYLPHOSPHONATE EXTRACTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4707492
A preliminary countercurrent scouting test indicates that uranium-233 product (in solutions approximately 150 g U/l, and 1.0 g Th/l, and 1.0 N HNO/sub 3/) can be rather effectively separated from its thorium impurities (including Th- 228, and probably its daughters) by a solvent extraction process employing 1.0 M di-sec-butylphenylphosphonate (DSBPP)Solvesso-100 as the uranium extractant. Complete uranium extraction and less than 2% thorium indicated that decontamination factors of greater than 50 are possible in a system employing a scrubbing solution of 1.0 N HNO/sub 3/, flow ratios (F/S/O) of 1/0.5/1.6, five stages of extraction, and six stages of scrubbing.
