Title: HIGH PHONON STATES OF QUADRUPOLE VIBRATION IN SPHERICAL NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters

Recently many strong low energy gamma rays (< 1 Mev) have been observed between excited states of Pd/sup 106/, Cd/sup 108/, Cd/sup 110/ and Cd/sup 114/. In comparison with the branching ratios obtained from the Weirskopf estimnte, these transitions are much stronger than high energy transitions (> 1 Mev). The spherical vibration model suggests that one phonon transition is enhanced, while two or higher phonon transitions are hindered. To explain this fact for transitions from second 2/sup +/ states, several nuclear models have been proposed. An attempt is made to assign higher excited states in terms of the spherical vibration model. (W.D.M.)
