THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY IN SWITZERLAND (in German)

In the coming decade Switzerland must find a new source of energy to meet its electricity needs. In view of conditions in Switzerland, atomic energy is one of the most promising sources. In addition, the Swiss machine, electric, and equipment industry is greatly interested in reactor development as a new potential export area. Reactor development in Switzerland began several years ago. The plans and projects which were laid out during this period are now being put into practice in the construction of the experimental power plant in Lucens. Both the government and private industry have spent considerable sums of money for building the research facilities necessary for reactor development, especially the Federal Institute for Reactor Research in Wurenlingen. Swiss efforts in this direction have been greatly aided by international cooperation, in which Switzerland actively participates. However, an even greater effort will be required if the work done hitherto is to come to fruition. Certain indications are given on the possibility of extending the presently realized concept of a heavy-water-moderated, gascooled pressure-tube reactor, and the goals of Swiss work in this field are discussed.
