NUCLEAR-POWERED AIRCRAFT (in German)

Journal Article · · Atompraxis (West Germany) Incorporated in Kerntechnik
OSTI ID:4706474
The development of nuclear-powered aircraft was formerly carried on with a view to military use. But after military aircraft declined in strategic importance, there was little reason left for continuing to develop nuclearpowered aircraft. However, a comparison between conventional and nuclear-powered commercial planes shows that the latter can carry a larger payload. Thus, once nuclear-planes are available, supersonic air transport will probably be more economical than it is at present. The development of a nuclear reactor to power these planes will also generally stimulate the European nuclearrocket and aircraft industry. (auth)
