THE PRODUCTION OF HEAVY METALS, URANIUM IN PARTICULAR, FROM LOW-GRADE ORES WITH THE AID OF CHLORINE GAS (in German)

The general conditions under which metal oxides can be volatilized at high temperatures in the form of chlorine compounds using only chlorine gas are discussed. The equilibria of uranium oxides with chlorine at high temperatures are dealt with, and measurements of the equilibria briefly described. The chlorination of uranium oxides can be carried out only above 1000 deg C at efficient rates and with efficient utilization of chlorine. The additional external heat required for reaction and vaporization of UO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ comes to about 92 kcal/kg U in the mixed oxides. Further processing of the metal chlorine compounds to metal and the possibility of reclaiming the chlorine are briefly discussed. It is then pointed out that the chlorination process makes it possible to win all metals present in the ore, inciuding Fe, in a high-value form, and thereby to make economical the processing of very low-grade ores.
