Measurements of the refractive index of liquid parahydrogen and normal hydrogen (25% parahydrogen and 75% orthohydrogen) were made in the equilibrium state at pressures of 1 to 9 atm, with an accuracy of not less than plus or minus 2 x 10/sup -4/ and an error of no more than plus or minus 1 x 10/sup -4/. The optical scheme of the device is based on the property of a planeparallel plate to displace the convergence point A of a homocentric beam by a quantity DELTA , which is proportional to the thickness of the plate t, and to its refractive index n.
