A generalised Fermi-Thomas method, in which Kmatrices are used to obtain the potential energy, is used to calculate the energies and density distributions of nuclei for all mass values. It is shown that satisfactory agreement with the known empirical values, neglecting small shell effects, can be obtained but the corresponding Kmatrices will differ from those given by Brueckner, Gammel and Weitzner. This method elucidates the manner in which the K-matrix affects the nuciear properties. (auth)
