INELASTIC SCATTERING OF 166-Mev O$sup 16$ IONS BY Ta$sup 18$$sup 1$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4703451

Observation of coincidences between the scattered ions and the de- excitation gamma -rays from the lowest excited states in inelastic scattering of 166-Mev O/sup 16/ ions to the lowest excited states of Ta/sup 181/ permitted separation of elastic and inelastic events. The results showed that Coulomb excitation of unresolved low-lying states contributed up to 8% to elastic differential cross sections for 166-Mev O/sup 16/ ions on Ta/sup 181/ in the angular region before the sharp drop to Rutherford values. At backward angles, the contribution was as high as 28%. The correction calculated by Coulomb excitation theory can apparently be used for the essential correction of heavy ion elastic scattering data. (D.C.W.)
