THE SAYAPULLO MINE AREA, CAJAMARCA DEPARTMENT, PERU

OSTI ID:4703202
The Sayapullo copper mine on Cerro Carmen Alto is on the faulted common limb between a large anticline and syncline in Cretaceous interbedded sandstone, limestone, and shale. Intrusives are rare. Cerro Carmen Alto is an intensely silicified body of sediments and the largest of abundant pipes of argillized and silicified rocks in the area. A system of east-west-striking veins nearly parallels the sediments. Wide veins contain mostly chalcopyrite, whereas narrow veins contain tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite. Although the entire mine area has high background radioactivity and weak anomalies are associated with several alteration pipes, only a small amount of uraninite is associated with tetrahedrite in the Clavo Jackson ore shoot on the Restauradora vein and apparently in a short segment of the Florida vein.
