RADIAL POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN A POSITIVE COLUMN IN A MAGNETIC FIELD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4703058
The radial distributions of floating potential in the positive column of a glow discharge in a longitudinal magnetic field were measured with electric probes designed to minimize the perturbation of the plasma. Ecker has shown that the shape of these distributions can provide a sensitive indication of the presence of enhanced electron-ion interactions. No evidence for enhanced interactions is noted; at magnetic field strengths below the threshold of the previously observed helical instability; the results are compatible with the classical ambipolar theory of the positive column.
