OSTI ID:4702918
A process for treating commercial graphite to lower its permeability to the order of 1 x 10/sup -5/ cm/sup 2//sec by a series of impregnations with a furfuryl alcohol type of monomer is described. Graphites with maximum pore diameters up to 40 mu , as measured by mercury porosimetry, can be treated. The impregnant is heated to> 2650 deg C in the process, so the treated material is suitable for high-temperature applications, as in the core of a nuclear reactor. Details of the experimental procedure and equipment and the effect of the process on the properties of the graphite are given. Tubes of HLM-85 graphite, 4 ft long and 3 1/2 in. in outside diameter with a wall thickness of 3/8 in., were treated to permeabilities of < 1 x 10/sup -5/ cm/sup 2//sec by the process. (auth)
