LEVELS IN RARE EARTH NUCLEI

Levels in 2 even-even nuclei Dy/sup 164/ and Gd/sup 158/ and in the odd- A nucieus Dy/sup 165/ have been investigated with the (d,p) reaction using 12-Mev deuterons accelerated with the F.S.U. tandem Van de Graaff. Levels in D/sup 164/ and Gd/sup 158/ were also investigated by inelastic proton scattering. The protons produced were analyzed with a 60 cm Browne-Buechnertype magnetic spectrograph, and were detected on 100 cm of nuclear-emulsion plates. The (p,p') runs were made at 90 and 133 c- with respect to the incident beam; the (d,p) runs were made at 25, 35, 45, and 65 c- on Dy/sup 163/; at 25, 45, and 65 c- on Gd/sup 157/; and at 45, 65, and 133 c- on Dy/sup 164/. Groundstate Q values were found to be 5706 surface proces 5 kev for the y/sup 163/(d,p) Dy/sup 164/ reaction. These Q values were relative to the kev. The following levels were assigned in Dy/sup 164/ from the energy systematics: 72 kev, 2/sup +/; 240 kev, 4/sup +/; 503 kev, 6/sup +/;, 761 kev, 2/sup +/; 827 kev, 3/sup +/; 919 kev, 4/sup +/; 1040 kev, 5/sup +/. A new level in Gd/sup 158/ at 1359 kev was assigned as 4/sup +/. (Dissertation Abstr.)
