HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS OF HNPF 19-ROD FUEL ELEMENT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4702574
Pressure-drop measurements and vibration characteristics were obtained for 20 to 100% of design flow through a 19-rod fuel element considered for the first core loading of the Hallam Nuclear Power Facility (HNPF). The principles of dimensional similitude were applied to convert the data obtained with water as the test fluid to equivaient values for sodium. The over-all pressure loss across the element ranged from 0.031 to 6.8 psi over the sodium flow range of 1.4 to 22.5 lb/sec. Friction factors across the bundle and entrance and exit loss coefficients for the element were obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from 13,000 to 130,000. No significant vibration of the rod assembly was induced by the flow of water. (auth)
