A process for the reduction of zirconium and hafnium tetrachloride with liquid magnesium to form metallic zirconium and hafnium is presented. The reduction reaction takes place at the phase boundary between a melt of magnesium and a melt of halogen zirconate or halogen hafnate. The formation of the halogen zirconate or halogen hafnate is carried out separately from the reduction of the tetravalent zirconium or hafnium to metal. (C.E.S.)
