IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO ULTRACENTRIFUGES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4702368
The design of an ultracentrifuge, in which the rotor is magnetically suspended and magnetically set in rotation, is patented. The rotor is of ferromagnetic material with minimum residual magnetism. It is not mounted in any bearings, but is carried by the magnetic field of a solenoid. The lower part of the rotor descends into a vessel of damping liquid in which there is a hollow cylinder ior horizontal stabilization and damping of the rotor. The hollow cylinder is made of ferromagnetic material and is freely mounted on thin wires in the same magnetic field as the rotor. The design also includes an illuminating device in the axis below the rotor and a pick-up picture tube of a television set in the axis of the ultracentrifuge above the cell. (M.P.G.)
