Absorbed Dose Calibration of an Ion Chamber

Journal Article · · Nature (London)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1038/1981318b0· OSTI ID:4702163
A method for calibrating an ion chamber in terms of absorbed dose is given which avoids the need for corrections for attenuation. The absorbed dose is measured using a carbon calorimeter, a carbon chamber, and a BaldwinFarmer chamber. The method was used with x-ray beams at 4 to 20 Mv and Co⁶⁰ gamma rays. The mean energy per ion pair in air at 0 deg C 760 mm Hg was determined to be 34.11 plus or minus 0.21 ev in carbon. A graph is given for the rad calibration factor of the Baldwin- Farmer chamber exposed in Perspex. (D.L.C.)
