A reactor fuel element, which is characterized by a consistently excellent bond between clad and core, is patented. The cermet core of the fuel element consists of particles of an oxide of a fissionable metal uniformly dspersed and embedded in a continuous matrix of Al, Zr, Mo, zirconium carbide, or molybdenum disilicide. The core is encased in a seamless envelope of the same material as the matrix, and the envelope is metallurgically bonded to the core. The fuel element may have various shapes, such as rod, tube, sphere, plate, or disk. (M.P.G.)
