Interspecies Differences in Accumulation of Gamma Emitters by Marine Organisms Near the Columbia River Mouth
Trends of species differences in radionuclide accumulation by marine organisms from near the mouth of the Columbia River are reported and discussed. Marine plankton, sessile algae, mollusks, crustaceans, and fish were collected during April 1959 and 1960, near the river mouth. From 1 to 4 samples of each species were analyzed each year. The concentrations of gamma emitters, expressed in picocuries per gram dry weight, in the various species are tabulated. Plankton and the sessile algae, Fucus furcatus, generally had the highest concentrations of most radioisotopes under consideration. Zn65 was most abundant in plankton, sessile algae, and soft parts of mollusks.
