IRRADIATION OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS

A process for radioinduced crosslinking in polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyester, polyacrylic ester, polylvinyl chloride, and natural and synthetic rubber is presented. The irradiation is effected in the presence of nitrous oxide, which eliminates any crosslinking-inhibiting effect and promotes crosslinking. It is assumed that nitrous oxide decomposes by the action of the ionizing radiation to form a free radical or ion that activates the neighboring molecule of the high polymer compound to effect the formntion of new crosslinking.
