THE XENON EFFECT ON THE STATICS OF A THERMAL REACTOR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4701339
The effect of xenon poisoning on the static reactivity of a thermal reactor is examined by four methods. Two of them, the exact and semi-exact solutions, consider the local effects of the xenon at every point of the reactor and in both, the global reactivity effect is obtained by performing the numerical integration of non-linear differential equations. In the other two, the perturbation method and the method of equivalent uniform poisoning, the xenon poisoning is originally regarded as an integrated effect with appropriate weighting functions while the reactivity change is obtained from correspondingly linearized diffusion equations. Both the exact solution and the method of equivalent uniform poisoning account for changes of the detailed configuration of the thermal flux within the equivalent cell while the other two do not. The values of the effective multiplication factor obtained by various methods are within a range of 100 pcm which is permissible in standard calculations of reactor statics. (auth)
