A review was made of the concept and use of RBE (relative biological effectiveness) and its application in radiation protection work. The conclusion reached is that there is no justification at the present time for departing from present ICRP practice, including the current relationship between RBE and Linear Energy Transfer (LET). However, the extent of the data on RBE relevant to low dose and low dose-rate conditions is very small indeed and major modifications in the concept and use of RBE in protection considerations may well become necessary in the future.
