THE INFLUENCE OF X-RAY IRRADIATION ON THE REPRODUCTIVE FUNCTION IN DOGS AND THEIR PROGENY OF THE FIRST GENERATION

Investigations were made on the influence of x radiation on the reproductive function of dogs and their progeny in single whole-body irradiation at the end of pregnancy in a dose of 350 to 400 r. In 73.1% of irradiated dogs no disturbances of the estral cycle were observed. Repeated pregnancy and labor were normal. Twelve dogs (23%), which had sustained radiation sickness, developed sterility; however, the estral cycle in 8 dogs was restored in 2 to 3 years. In 5 dogs gestation terminated in abortion. In young female dogs irradiated before binth the sexual reflex was inhibited. The estral stage in the dogs appeared at the age of 2 to 3 years and pregnancy ensued in oniy 4 dogs out of 15. The dogs gave birth to only 2 to 3 puppies: all of which were nonviable with marked developmental abnormalities and monstrosities. (auth)
