Title: PRESSURE DROPS THROUGH CYLINDRICAL BEDS OF PACKED SPHERES. Final ReporT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4701002

The procedures and data obtained in testing the effect of Reynolds number on the friction factor across a cylindrical bed of 3/4, 1, 11/4, and 11/2 inch diameter randomly packed spheres are included. The test results indicated the friction factors to be between 5.15 and 7.35 depending upon the ball size and surface finish. The Reynolds number was varied over a wide range, from a low of 3000 for the 3/4 inch spheres to a maximum of 370,000 for the 11/2 inch spheres. For all sizes, the friction factor became constant for Reynolds numbers above 40,000. The tests were run in the high pressure gas facility using carbon dioxide as the test fluid. (auth)
