STUDY OF RADIATION-OXIDATION OF POLYMERS BY MEANS OF ESR AND IR SPECTROSCOPY (in Japanese)
Radiation-oxidation of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is studied by means of ESR and IR spectroscopy. Several kinds of radicals are produced by irradiation, and by irradiation under suitable conditions a sample can be obtained in which a specified radical is rich. Samples are prepared in which certain radicals are rich, and changes after breaking vacuum are followed. The radicals are --CH/sub 2/--CH--CH/sub 2/-- (FR/ sub VI/), --CH/sub 2/--CH--CH = CH--CH/sub 2/ -- (FR/sub VI/) and --CH/sub 2/--CH -(--CH== CH--) --CH/sub 2/--(FR/sub I/) in PE; --CH/sub 2/--C(CH/sub 3/) --CH/sub (FR/sub VIII/), --CH/sub 2/ -- C(CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/ (FR/sub IX/), polyenyl radica ls with shorter conjugation (FR/sub db/, and polyenyl radicals with longer conjugation (FR/sub I/) in PP; and FR/sub db/ and FR/sub I/ in PVC. Of the radicals, those that give the ESR asymmetric single spectrum of peroxide radical after introduction of air are of the alkenyl type, except for FR/sub VIII/ and FR/sub IX/ in PP. FR/sub VI/ in PE does not show this asymmetric spectrum. Oxygenation temperatures of the radicals are determined. (JAIF)
