A STUDY ON RADIOACTIVE SELF-LUMINOUS COMPOUNDS. II. ON THE APPLICATION OF RADIO-ACTIVE SELF-LUMINOUS COMPOUNDS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes

The temperature dependence of the light intensity and the enhancement of the electroluminescence may be used as an application of radioactive self- luminous compounds. However, one of the limitations for this application is the deterioration of the materials. These problems are studied. The materials are phosphors of powder form of zinc sulfide or zinc silicate type and about 50 mu C of radioactive isotopes such as Sr-90-Y-90 in carbonates mixed in 300 mg of these materials. The light intensity vs. the operating temperature in the first temperature rising course of each sample is shown. It is concluded that phosphors of t/sup -n/ decay type have strong temperature dependence and those of e/sup - gamma t/ decay type less temperature dependence, similar to the case of photoluminescence. The temperature dependence of photoluminescence is used to measure temperature, The use of a radioactive self-luminous compound for the detection of temperature is profitable because no external exciting system is necessary. The deterioration of light intensity by radiation damage in the compounds also exists. (JAIF)
