BINDING ENERGY OF THE ALPHA PARTICLE AND THE VELOCITY-DEPENDENT POTENTIALS

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters

The binding energy of the alpha particle was calculated by a variational method using the velocity-dependent potentials derived by Green as well as the Herndon potential. The calculated binding energies are small in comparison with experimental values. The results show the importance of short range correlations between pairs of nucleons and the sensitivity of the binding energy to changes in the relative strength of central and tensor forces.
