Solvent extraction of ferric iron, U, Be, Cu, Ni, Co, and Zn as chelates with dibenzoylmethane was studied using butyl acetate or chloroform as an extracting solvent. The spectrophotometric determination of Fe and U using this method was also investigated. Quantitative extraction can be obtained at pH 2 to 3 for Fe, pH 5 to 9 for U, Be, and Cu, pH 8 to 10 for Ni, pH 9 to 10 for Zn, and near pH 10 for Co. Among these metals, U and Be are extracted even in the presence of EDTA. With the information on the extraction behaviors of these metal chelates, the methods for the separation of U and Be from fission products, the separation of Fe from Cu, Ni, and Co, and the separation of Cu from Ni and Co were examined. Crystals of ferric- and uranyl chelate were prepared and the compositions were estimated to be Fe(C/sub 15/H/sub 11/O/sub 2/)/sub 3/ and UO/ sub 2/(C/sub 15/H/sub 1 1/O/sub 2/)/sub 2/. Ferric- and uranyl chelates in organic solvent exhibit absorption bands in and near ultraviolet region, and the maxima at 410 m of Fe and 400 m of U can be used for the spectrophotometric determination. Beer's law is obeyed up to 2 ppm of Fe and 10 ppm of U. Molar extinction coefficient of Fe is 17,000 1/M cm at 410 m and of U 20,300 1/M cm at 400 m and 17,680 1/M cm at 410 m . By the analytical procedure proposed, 0.00003-0.0001% of Fe in Ni, Co, and Zn salt was successfully determined. (auth)
