RADIATION-INDUCED THERMOLUMINESCENCE FOR IRRADIATED POLYMERS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4698648
Glow curves of radiation-induced thermoluminescence for various polymers were investigated under several conditions. Samples were irradiated at --196 deg C and warmed up by a heater. The luminescence from the sample was detected by a photomultiplier tube. Irradiation and measurements were carried out in air. For polypropylene, after 10/sup 4/ rad, the glow curve has peaks at --170 deg C and -- 130 deg C. The luminescent intensity increases with the dose. At 10/sup 7/ rad, saturation is observed, and the giow curve has one peak at --176 deg C. When the sample is exposed to uv or daylight after irradiation, luminescent intensity decreases. For polyethylene after various doses, the glow curves have peaks at -- 170 deg , -120 deg , and --40 deg C. Saturation is observed at 10/sup 6/ rad. Saturated hydrocarbons with the same main chain as polyethylene have glow curves of the same shape. The glow curve for polystyrene has one peak at -180 deg C. The glow curve for nylon has two peaks at -180 deg and --130 deg C. The maximum luminescent intensity is observed at 10/sup 6/ rad. Luminescent intensity decreases rapidly with time after irradiation. (A.G.W.)
