Title: SUBACUTE ILEUS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE: STENOSIS OF THE ILEUM AS A RESULT OF IRRADIATION A RADIOLOGIC STUDY

Journal Article · · Arch. Klin. Chir.
OSTI ID:4698525

Seven cases of intestinal obstruction as a result of pelvic radiotherapy are described. In all cases the resected damaged segment of ileum showed characteristic changes. In one case a penetrating abcess was found, with development of an enterovaginal fistula. For such an injury, a 6000 mr-hr dose of Ra appears to be required. Ileus developed in said cases between 1/2 and 11 yr after radiotherapy. The syndrome is described. Treatment consists of surgical removal of the constricted segment. Radiologic diagnosis of radiation- induced ileus is discussed. (H.H.D.)
