The binary system niobium pentachloride - niobium pentoxide and the dissociating compound niobium oxytrichloride, occurring in that system, were studied in order to obtain a better understanding of the reactions occurring during the chlorination of niobium ore concentrates. A critical review of the literature on the binary system is first given. The measurement of the vapor pressure of the several equilibrium curves is described. The vapor pressures were measured with a static method, using a glass sickle gage. The least-squares method was used to calculate the vapor pressure equations. The determination of the partial pressure of NbOCl/sub 3/ of the three-phase equilibrium S/sub NbOCl/ sub 3/ -S/sub Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ -G is then described. A study i s made of the occurrence of compounds in the binary system NbCl/sub 5/- Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/. The Bakhuis-Roozeboom space model for the binary system is given. The thermodynamic potential of NbOCl/sub 3/ is calculated from the equilibrium constant of the equilibrium 5 NbOCl/sub 3g/ 3 NbCl/sub 5g/ + Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5s/. (J.S.R.
