The Transuranic Package Transporter-II (TRUPACT-II) was developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) primarily for the shipment of contact-handled transuranic (CH-TRU) waste from DOE generator/storage sites to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Approximately 66 percent of the CH-TRU waste inventory in the DOE system can be shipped in the TRUPACT-II packaging, the remaining 34 percent cannot be shipped in the TRUPACT-II because of limitations on the size, shape, or type of the payload containers. This paper describes a packaging optimization study, including the development of a computer model, that may be used to evaluate an optimized fleet of packagings for transporting CH-TRU waste from DOE storage/generator sites to the WIPP.
