A process is given for the recovery of U from U ores by dissolution, oxidation of the U to the soluble uranyl form, and separation of U by ion exchange or other means. In this process, the filtered pulp is divided into two streams, one of the streams is stirred to form a vortex, and O/sub 2/ and SO/sub 2/ are passed through the vortex to form ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. This stream is recirculated to the ore for dissolution and oxidation, whlle the other stream is treated for U recovery. (D.L.C.)
