GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION BY THE TECHNIQUE OF PRE-IRRADIATION IN AIR AT LOW TEMPERATURE (in Japanese)
The graft copolymerization of styrene on polypropylene initiated by the trapped radlcal formed by gamma irradiation in air at low temperature was studied. The structure of macroradicals formed by irradiation was also investigated by electron spin resonance spectra. It was found that on irradiation in vacuum and in air at --78 deg C, allyl radical and peroxy radical were formed to a dominant extent, respectively. Radical decay was also followed by esr measurement. On admitting air at --78 deg C to the irradiated polymer containing allyl radical, the radical changed quantitatively to peroxy radical. The concentration of peroxy radical formed by irradiation in air at --78 deg C was 1.6 times higher than that formed by irradiation at room temperature. On admitting air at 18 deg C to the radicals, the former radical decayed with a shorter half life (30 min), and the latter radical decayed with a longer half life (about 13 hr). The polymer was pre-irradiated in air at --78 deg C and grafted as a function of the time. On storing at --78 deg C, the degree of grafting did not change. At 15 deg C, on the other hand, the degree of grafting decreased extremely. As the curve of decrease of degree of grafting was similar to the decay curve of the radical, it was assumed that the grafting was initiated mainly by the trapped radical. The effects of irradiation temperature, grafting temperature, and irradiation dose on the grafting and the formation of polystyrene homopolymer were also investigated. (P.C.H.)
