An electromagnetically driven, T-shaped shock tube is filled with He to a pressure of 1 to 5 mm Hg, and a shock wave is produced by discharging a capacitor in the tube. The plasma thus produced is found to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium, and temperatures of 20,000 to 45,000 deg K can be produced. The intensities of the He emission lines are measured, and these intensities are used to compute the oscillator strengths for several of the lines. (T.F.H.)
