BASIC EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF BOILING FLUID FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER AT ELEVATED PRESSURES. Montly Progress Report, April 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4697348
During April, (47) instrumented burnout points and 1 intentional physical burnout were obtained for vertical upflow of water at 1000 psia inside a 1.475-in. ID heater tube. This tube simulates the inner channel of one of the candidate oxide fuel elements whose overall burnout performance was determined previously using the Composite Tubular Test Section. Analysis of the data showed that the burnout performance of the tube, when operated in parallel with the annular channel of the Composite Tubular Test Section, was lower than for separate, non-parallel operation. These results demonstrate the necessity of conducting burnout tests on whole fuel element geometries rather than component channels. Burnout testing of a 0.930-in. ID heater tube and fabrication of a 0.504-in. ID are now in progress. Fabrication of components directed toward upgrading loop capabilities is proceeding. (auth)
