TWO CASES OF THYROID SARCOMA AFTER IRRADIATION IN ADULTHOOD (in German)
A report was given of the development of 2 cases of lethal thyroid sarcoma, following radiation therapy for follicular adenocarcinoma in 2 female patients, aged 42 and 75. In both cases the follicular adenocarcinoma occurred years aft er strumectomy for a benign, nodular goiter. Sarcomas of the thyroid (a reticular cell sarcoma and an undifferentiated sarcoma) developed after latent periods of 5 and 12 years following intensive postoperative x irradiation. The total surface doses in the 2 cases were 10,559 and 5320 r. In the adult, the development of radiation-induced thyroid malignancies is probably associated with accessory factors. This association is shown by the sequence of events: adenoma; recurrence of adenoma; follicular adenocarcinoma. (H.H.D.)
