Approximately half of the x-ray machines in the country are owned and operated by dentists. There are approximately the same number of dental x-ray machines as there are dentists, and the number of dental films exposed each year is approximately equal to our population. Radiation hygiene surveys have been and are being conducted to ascertain the awareness of the dental profession to potential hazards from radiation and the steps taken to reduce the dosage to patients and dental personnel. The extent of the surveys and the extent of radiological health programs and legislation in the various states are summarized. (TCO)
