A shielded container is designed for temporary storage of irradiated fuel elements during transfer from a ship reactor to a relatively small water pond on board. The container comprises two mating tubular parts, the first having a closed lower end and an open upper end and the second having an open lower end and a closed upper end. a fuel element magazine demountably located in the first part, an opening in the wall of the first part for sideways removal of the magazine, and a port in the closed end of the second part for endwise loading of fuel elements into the magazine.
