ON THE VARIATION IN RELATIVE ABUNDANCES OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS AMONG METEORITES, IGNEOUS ROCKS AND SEDIMENTS

Journal Article · · Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (England)

The validity of the formula, log (E/sub i//La) = i/7 log (Gd/La) + c/sub i/, (where E/sub i/ denotes the i-th element from La in the periodic table, and c/ sub i/ is an integral constant of E/sub i/), was checked on selected data of rocks, inclusive of meteorites, and it was found that it can be tolerably applied to rocks also. A diagram of previously determined data suggests that crustal materials with stronger concentrations of lighter rare earths can be well derived from chondritic materials, probably, by the successive magmatic fractionation. Also in the diagram, sequence in the degree of enrichment towards lighter rare earths is parallel with that in the acidity of silicate material. (P.C.H.)
