A PROGRAMMED KERR CELL FRAMING CAMERA
A new high-speed framing camera is described, using a single programmed Kerr cell shutter coupled to a wide field rotating drum streak camera having a potential maximum writing speed of 12,000 in./sec and an effective relative aperture of f15. The experimenial Programmed Kerr Cell Camera can take up to 100 discreet exposures of 10/sup -7/ to 5 x 10/sup -7/ sec duration at framing rates greater than 500,000 fps. This camera system has particular advantages when the object dimensions change with time or when its aspect ratio is not unity, in which cases the writing speed of the camera may be more efficiently used than with more conventional framing cameras. Since exposure time is independent of framing rate it is also of special usefulness when relatively slow framing rates must be accompanied by very fast exposure times. Frame timing can be known to a precision in the order of nanoseconds; it is easy to correlate this timing with electrical phenomena associated with the event being photographed by means of oscillographic records. A number of subjects were photographed with the experimental PKCC to determine and demonstrate its capabilities. An overall resolving power of better than 45 line pairs/mm was measured at film speeds up to 5,000 in./sec and it is expected that a resolution of at least 30 line pairs/mm will be realized at a maximum film speed of 12,000 in./sec.
