EVIDENCE FOR THE REACTION $pi$$sup -$ + p $Yields$ /anti p/ + d AND SOME METHODS OF INVESTIGATING VIRTUAL NUCLEON EXCHANGE PROCESSES

The cross section for the process pi /sup -/ + p yields p + d was studied in a spark chamber experiment and was found to be 16 plus or minus 10 mu b at 4.13 Bev/c and 8 mu b at4.95 Bev/c. The interpretation of this process in terms of a virtual nuclear exchange is discussed and comparison is made with other possible nucleon exchange reactions such as p + p yields pi /sup +/ + d and backward pion-nucleon elastic scattering.
