Electron Spin Resonance Investigations of Irradiated Carbohydrates

Electron spin resonance measurements were performed on a series of irradiated sugars. Irradiations were carried out in a Co/sup 60/ source at dose rates of 1.25 x 106 rads/hr in both vacuum and air to total doses of 107 and 108 rads. The spectra of the irradiated monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides were similar and showed little hyperfine structure. The significant feature was the doublet of 15-20 gauss separation exhibited by all compounds with the exception of lyxose and lactose, that produced four-line spectra. Amylose and amylopectin produced only very weak signals. (C.E.S.)
