CONTRIBUTION TO THE PHASE DIAGRAM CALCIUM-ZINC

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4696158
The phase diagram of the calcium--zinc system was re-examined by means of differential thermal analysis supplemented with x-ray diffraction and vapor effusion measurements. Evidence was found for the eight following compounds: Ca/ sub 5/Zn/sub 2/, Ca/sub 7/Zn/sub 4/, CaZn, CaZn/sub 2/, Ca/sub 7/ Zn/sub 2/O, CaZn/sub 5/, CaZn/sub 11/, and CaZn/sub 13/. The compounds CaZn/sub 2/, CaZn/sub 5/, and CaZn/sub 11/ melt congruently at 704, 695, and 724 deg C, respectively. Incongruent melting is exhibited by Ca/sub 5/Zn/sub 2/, Ca/sub 7/Zn/sub CaZn, Ca/ sub 7/Zn/sub 20/, and CaZn/sub 13/ at 394, 414, 439, 642, and 669 deg C, respectively. Crystal structure transformations are shown by Ca/sub 5/Zn/sub 2/ at 389 deg C and by CaZn at 414 deg C. Some observations were also made concerning the influence of hydrogen contamination on the allotropic transitions of calcium. (auth)
