PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF WATER OR HYDROGEN HAVING AN INCREASED DEUTERIUM CONTENT
Deuterium exchange reactions between H and water in the presence of a catalyst are employed in a patented process for increasing the deuterium content of water or H. Streams of molecular H and water under superatmospheric pressure are passed countercurrent to each other serially through a hot and cold column in the presence of a catalyst of nickel or the platinum-group metals. The catalyst in aqueous dispersion or colloidal solution is circulated through the columns with the water. H of increased deuterium content can be withdrawn from the circuit as it passes from the hot to the cold column. Water of increased deuterium content can be obtained by continuously withdrawing predetermined proportions from the catalyst circuit as it passes from the cold to the hot column. The liquid is freed from the catalyst, and additional quantities of catalyst sol are added to the circuit. Variations of the process and specific examples are described. (M.P.G.)
